Portraits

I paint people. In all of its variables, humanity and human characteristics are the most challenging and enjoyable subjects. Portraits are specific – they tell us about an individual at a particular time, with what they wear, their mannerisms, gestures, and of course, how they look – the passage of time etched on their face. As I work on the portraits, I think of what Vern Wilson taught me – stroke & caress when painting flesh. The stroke & caress is part of the loving celebration of painting the people I know. The life force of each individual that shines through their eyes, coupled with the beauty and sensuousness of their forms, offers an endless supply of compelling and stimulating themes. I'm drawn into their being as I work to get a likeness as well as their essence.
